The art of mixing and matching

Don’t be scared to try new and different and perhaps even daring combinations of décor and homeware pieces. Have fun experimenting- you’ll know by looking at the combination of what works and what doesn’t but herewith is a basic guide from Flock Shop to help you.

Incorporate a combination of different sizes, shapes, colours and textures to add interest to a space.

1. Size and scale of pattern: don’t use all the same scale and size- this will be BORING! Rather select a larger scale pattern or design as the hero (dominant) pattern and then combine with some smaller-scale patterns and some textured plains.

For example a bold large-scale floral-like Flock Shop’s Protea square cushion with a rectangular cushion in Broad stripe in Taupe in printed cotton and then some plains in a different textured fabric like a slubby woven linen.

2. Colour: Try to use colours that are similar through the whole space /house for consistency- select a palette of 4 key colours that work together tonally and then chose pieces with different patterns but in the same colours so that there is variety in terms of the pattern but the colours all compliment each other without becoming a clashing OTT space which is guaranteed to bring on a headache.

For example: a geometric pattern (grey, white and yellow)– bold- combined with traditional script (grey and white) – very different styles but work because the colours work.

If in doubt follow the 6-30-10 rule.

Main colour- 60% of space ie: walls, 30% secondary colour and 10% pop of accent colour-this can be bolder as you’ll use it on smaller pieces so easy to change seasonally, with your mood etc without breaking the bank.

3. Patterns: I would recommend using no more than 3 to 4 in a space- or it can be too eclectic and somewhat overwhelming. To tone it down bring in plains some of which can be richly textured e.g a cable knit throw.

Trust your gut- you’ll know when something just doesn’t quite work. But have fun being creative and trialling different combinations. It’s your space and you need to love it!
